Visiting Delhi for the first time? Read these tips!

I've just returned from my first trip to Delhi. I stayed at Hotel Le Roi (Near New Delhi Railway Station; delhihotelsleroi.com ). The hotel provides affordable accommodation and friendly personal service. Since this was my first visit to Delhi, I would like to tip future traveler to this city so that they have a hassle free, safe and pleasant stay. Here are some of my recommendations and tips:

- Don't necessarily avoid street food, but aim to eat food that you see cooked freshly in front of you. Packed mineral water is recommended for drinking.

- Book your hotel in advance. The city offers all types of hotels - from Luxury 5 Star to budget hotel. If you are a budget traveler, then hotels near New Delhi Railway Station and Karol Bagh are suitable for you.

- If you are coming from outside of India, then remember that you will find general public often curious and may ask personal questions! Don't be surprised if you are stared at.

- It is advisable to book a car for the day if you have a hectic schedule. Discourage Taxis and Auto-Rickshaw guys if they try to extract more money out of you.

- Beware of pickpockets. Be proactive; do not give in to any person wanting to guide you around. In case you get misguided or lose your way while traveling in the city, look for the nearest Police Control Room (PCR) Van or dial 100 for swift help.

- The best time to visit Delhi, India is between September to March as the climate is favourable.

- The reception of your hotel will help you in case you have any query about the location or city in general. Do not hesitate to ask.

Turn the bathroom light on before you retire to bed in a hotel room

I met this friend of mine in a hotel where I was staying and both of us were pleasantly surprised. Though we live in the same city but could not meet for long as both of us were busy in our respective profession.

The same night after dinner I went up to his room and had a long chat. During the discussion he disclosed his habit of keeping the bathroom lights of the hotel room on during the night.

"It is harder to accomplish in an unfamiliar hotel room and one can fall while negotiating way to the bathroom in night when half asleep," explained my friend. He makes sense. I think in our home we know that we can make it there, do our thing and get back to bed even if half asleep. Keeping the bathroom light on with door shut can to help you see your way with minimally intrusive light.

Places To Visit Around Delhi

If you are in Delhi and have 5 days to move around (within and nearby places), then you can actually make your Delhi trip quite a memorable one! Delhi itself have a lot of places of tourist's interest. Some of the 'MUST SEE' places within Delhi are Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Lotus Temple, Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place and Akshardham Temple. The details of the interesting places can be found here: www.delhihotelsleroi.com/places-to-visit-in-delhi.php

If we talk about visiting places cities near to Delhi, then the top most 3 places we recommend are Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur in Rajasthan and Rishikesh in Uttaranchal.

Agra: Agra is famous for the Taj Mahal, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This amazing historical monument is situated on the banks of River Yamuna. Apart from the Taj Mahal, the city is home to other UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort, and has carved a place for itself on the world tourism map.

Jaipur: Jaipur is 260 km from Delhi and 240 km from Agra and forms the golden triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Popular as Pink City, Jaipur is also the capital of Rajasthan. The ancient forts: Nahargarh, Amer, Jaigarh and Moti Doongari are testimonials of the bygone era and a reminder of their lingering romance and chivalry.

Rishikesh: Located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, Rishikesh is known as the gateway to the Himalayas. Scenically located where the Ganges River comes down from the Himalayas, Rishikesh catapulted to Western fame when the Beatles dropped by for a visit.
